The Thorns_materiality and transcendence
The site should simply be an undefined urban block open for anyone and anything as endless expansion of existing horizontality already connotes. Imposing a grandiose urban axis or forceful connections would damage the unassuming nature of inherent public-ness. The strategy has been to incite the memory and reflection of the historically charged site to subtly merge itself with the surrounding context.
The Martyr Plaza sunken in the center of the site contains a structure made with 8,000 steel extrusions. The totality of aggregated steel thorns, laid on top of each other, symbolizes the collective spirits of those martyred at the site two centuries ago. The piercing sharpness and weight-ness of heavy guage steel reinforce the memory of a place once known for persecution and oppression. The experience is physical and immediate all around the ambulatory at every level.
The interplay of light and shadow through randomly layered thorns converge inside the church as one holy spirit where the spirits of saints are vividly remembered. A narrow path leads visitors through the thorns towards a large park with vertical poplar trees in a strict grid formation. It is a space of the Resurrection, bliss of life itself. Indifferent to what has happened, the nature transcends time and moves
on.
가시(加時)_ 물성과 초월성
연속적으로 이어진 수평으로 펼쳐진 대지는 자유로운 점유를 기다리는 열린 장소가 되어야 한다. 보이지 않는 축을 설정하거나 확인할 수 없는 도시적 스케일의 연결을 강제하기 보다는 그 장소에 체화된 기억과 반향이 주변과 자연스럽게 연계되도록 의도하였다.
대지의 중심부에 위치한 순교광장은 8000여개의 철재 가시들을 담고 있다. 공간을 가로지르거나 분절하지 않는 쌓아 올려진 전체로서의 ‘가시’ 구조물은 이 땅에 적층된 순교자의 영혼들을 상징한다. 광장으로 접근하는 회랑을 거닐며 경험하는 그 날카로운 존재감, 비 규칙적으로 쌓여진 무거운 형상은 이곳이 박해와 처형의 현장이었음을 즉각적인 경험으로 깨닫게 한다. 광장에 도착하여 하늘을 올려다 보았을 때 인지하게 되는 구조물 사이로 비치는 눈부신 빛과 그림자의 교차는 순교를 통하여 영원히 기억되고 부활한 성인들의 정신을 상징한다.
다양한 빛으로 상징된 순교자의 영혼들은 비로소 성당에서 하나의 공간, 하나의 빛으로 수렴된다. 성당을 나와 빛을 따라 천천히 올라와 만나게 되는 넓고 푸르른 공원은 부활의 공간이자 생명으로 가득한 환희의 공간이다. 공원에 심어진 44개의 포플러 나무는 그날의 박해 이후로 한 세기 넘도록 이어져온 순교의 정신이다. 무심한 듯 펼쳐진 자연을 거닐며 차분히 기억을 쌓아가는, 시간을 초월한 장소로 구현되길 바란다.
