An archipelago of museums
NMC (National Museum Complex) is a platform in Administrative City where culture meets nature. The 11 newly-proposed museum facilities and programs will achieve harmony with natural green spaces and a waterside park, creating a cultural base where contemporaneity and primitivity coexist. Originating in the margins of the city, NMC presents a new standard of public cultural space. Its form is that of an archipelago of 11 scattered islands. This spatial strategy takes into consideration the individual characteristics of each museum while allowing management of the complex as a whole.
The huge platform, covering an area of 190,000m2, meets with a various strata of natural and urban topography, including the Geumgang River, Jecheon Creek and Central Park, forming gentle wrinkles in the landscape. These soft, carpet-like undulations help induce perception of the individual museums as part of a single, unified “field.” They also guide visitors' lines of flow and provide a variety of settings in which to enjoy outdoor activities. The 11 cultural stations are placed within this large, site-unifying gesture, as if at odds with each other. Below the platform, invisible from the outside, are a variety of amenities for the integrated management of the museums, as well as several central storehouses. Systems and modules designed for efficient use create a more subdivided spatial infrastructure.
NMC(National Museum Complex)는 문화와 자연이 만나는 행정중심복합도시(Administrative City)의 플랫폼이다. 새롭게 제안되는 11개의 박물관 문화시설과 프로그램, 자연 녹지와 수변공원이 어우러져, 현대성과 원시성이 함께 공존하는 문화적 거점이 된다. NMC는 도시의 여백에서 시작하여 사람들(public공공)을 위한 문화공간의 새로운 기준을 제시한다. NMC는 흩뿌려진(scattered?) 11개의 군도의 모습을 하고 있다. 이 배치의 전략은 각 박물관의 개별적 성격과 특징들을 고려하면서도 통합적인 관리와 운영이 가능하도록 하기 위함이다.
총 190,000㎡인 거대한 플랫폼은 주변의 금강, 제천, 중앙공원 등 다양한 층위의 자연적, 도시적 지형(topography)들과 만나 완만한 주름을 형성한다. 카펫과 같은 공원의 부드러운 주름들은 각 개별 박물관들을 하나의 영역으로 인지하도록 돕고 하나의 장(field)으로 엮는 역할을 한다. 또, 방문객들의 이동 동선(흐름)을 안내하고 야외공간(outdoor activity)을 즐길 수 있는 다양한 조경적(landscape) 요소가 된다. 대지를 아우르는 하나의 큰 제스쳐 안에는 11개의 문화 정거장(station)이 엇갈리듯 위치한다. 플랫폼 하부에는, 밖으로 드러나지는 않지만, 박물관 통합운영을 지원하기 위한 각종 편의시설(Comforts and Amenities)과 통합수장고(Central Storehouse)가 삽입되고, 효율적인 사용을 위한 시스템과 모듈이 더욱 세분화된 공간적 인프라를 구축하고 있다.
